In our spring newsletter, we provided some facts about the history of insurance, which we really enjoyed researching. Since then we’ve been reading more facts about the insurance and property industries. Here are a few interesting ones we thought you’d enjoy:

  1. It is possible to take out cover against alien abductions. The UFO Abduction Insurance Company claims to have been the first to introduce such a policy in 1987.

  1. Although the history of insurance dates way back to the times of ancient civilisations, the earliest known physical contract was signed in Genoa, Italy during 1343.

  1. Whilst on a promotional roadshow in 2003 for his new TV show, puppet Basil Brush had his tail insured for £1m.

  1. There is a superstition that it is bad luck to leave a house by a different door to the one you entered by. Also, you may be aware that it is considered unlucky to open up an umbrella when inside, but did you know the same is said for carrying a spade on your shoulder?

  1. We wouldn’t suggest trying this in place of FLEE cover, but it was once considered good luck to have the plant houseleek growing on your roof, as it was thought to protect the house from lightning. To have trees such as rowan and holly growing nearby was also seen as lucky.
